Even in the earliest days—in spite of what we didn't know—the model has worked: homeless people write and sell the magazine, earn money, grow in self-respect, and move themselves off the streets.
Lynn was homeless and living in a van in the woods with her husband. When he was arrested and jailed for an old charge, she reached out to Speak Up for help. We gave her some encouragement, training, and large supply of free magazines.
She spent the weekend at local festival selling the magazines one by one. She kept the cash from each magazine she sold (which is the point).
Then she disappeared.
We had no idea where she gone or what had happened.
Two years later a huge gleaming white semi truck pulled up in front of our office. Lynn climbed out, she was wearing nice clothes and carrying two cellphones. She looked well.
"Hey," she said. "I was just passing through and thought I'd say 'thank you.' A couple years ago I sold your magazines for a weekend. I used that money to renew my commercial driver's license and get back on my feet. We have a place down in South Carolina and we are doing good. Thanks for believing in me."
Lynn's story shows how Speak Up works. Give people some tools and training, show that you believe in them, and watch them change their own future.
The Next Level Giving Campaign is Underway
This will guarantee the launch of three new layers to give voiceless people a louder voice, expand the income-building opportunity, and provide stronger support through an online network.
Based on the campaign progress so far ($0 of $12K raised), this looks to be one of those triumphant come-from-behind stories. A slow start followed by a smashing finish. (Think of your favorite underdog sports movie.)
Thanks for your partnership.

Ruth sells Speak Up magazines and personally-designed greeting cards as her source of income. We're looking for donors who can help fund...
